🇬🇧The Burrell Collection
The man who collected the world. That’s one of the things I read about William Burrell when I started reading everything I could about him once I visited his collection in Glasgow. A man who collected 9000 objects throughout his adult life - 75 years. William Burrell made his first purchase when he was only 15 years old. He was the curator of his own collection, and the records are registered in 28 books all handwritten by him. When he passed away, Burrell left his collection as a gift to the city of Glasgow.
The moment I went through the 16th Century stone arch at the entrance, which is also part of Burrell’s collection, I was blown away by the space which is extremelly beautiful, so vast and full of light. It’s mind blowing that this whole collection belonged to one person, and the various pieces used to be displayed all around his residence - a castle, as part of the decor. Before you go into one of the main rooms, there’s a sitting area where the incredible Warwick Vase is right in the middle of the room. So, you can chat with your friend(s) whilst admiring this Roman marble vase found in the villa of Emperor Hadrian. When we get to the end of the building on the ground floor, it’s as if we are walking into the woods which are kept apart from us only by the glass walls of this huge room with very modern settings. It’s one of most incredible museum rooms I’ve visited, and it fascinated me to be so close to nature whilst admiring centuries of art.
The collection has a wide range of items: religious sculptures, stone arches, burial pieces from excavated tombs, architectural fragments, weapons, furniture such as the matrimonial bedhead of Henry VIII and Anne of Cleaves, Turkish and Islamic ceramics, paintings by Dutch and French artists. I was quite surprised by the number of paintings by Degas for example.
There are also a lot of textiles. The most beautiful tapestries, many of them hanging from the walls of the high-ceiling rooms. One thing I particularly liked was the interactive totems which bring the exhibition to life for children and adults alike. They’re quite inovative, and transform the experience. I’m sharing a video below which was made when the Collection was reopened in March 2022 after a long period where it was closed for refurbishment. It’ll give you a peak into the Collection. When you find yourself in Glasgow pay the Burrell a visit. Its really worth it, and the entrance is free.
🇧🇷 A Coleção Burrell
E a entrada é gratuita.
🇬🇧The Pollock Country Park
The Burrell Collection is inside Pollock Country Park which is the largest park in Glasgow, and in fact the only country park in the city, with a Green Flag award which means that it meets the national standard of quality for parks and green spaces. It’s got 146-hectares with plenty of space for cycling, trekking, running, for keeping wild life such as Highland cows. It’s on the southside of Glasglow and of easy access too. If you’re an Outlander fan you might have seen bits of it in season 7 , I was told.
There’s a Scottish National Trust property in the park, Pollock House. After visiting the Burrell Collection we walked to the house for some tea and cake because it was flipping cold. The walk is through beautiful woodland, and despite being a very cold day, it was very sunny which made the walk a real pleasure. I do love being outdoors on a very cold day if it involves long walks as I find it quite invigorating. The place was busy with people of all ages. Some running, others cycling, others like myself and my friend just enjoying the day and talking our heads off.
🇧🇷O Country Park Pollock
🇬🇧An Apple Cake by Anja Dunk
This is a very handy recipe to have as it can be put together in no time. Perfect for that last minute visit, or for that cake craving. Plus it uses only one saucepan. Pears also work very well here.
You’ll need a 23cm tin, greased and floured
The batter:
175g unsalted butter
150g golden caster sugar
200g plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
3 medium eggs, beaten
1/4 tsp fine sea salt
To top the cake:
6 small apples, peeled, cored and halved then sliced
raisins (or raspberry or blackberry)
1 tbsp vanilla sugar
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
Preheat the oven (180oC/160C if fan assisted)
Melt the butter in a large saucepan, and turn off the heat as soon as the last pieces start melting - the heat of the pan will finish the job. Add the sugar and beat for one minute, then add the flour, baking powder, sal and beaten eggs. Stir the mixture with a wooden spoon until a smooth batter is formed. Pour the batter into the prepared tin, place the apple slices on top of the batter, sprinkle with the vanilla sugar and cinnamon, and end by scattering over the raisins/raspberry/blackberry.
Bake for approximately 35-45 minutes, until the cake is golden, and most importantly until a skewer comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let it cool in the tin, before transferring it to a serving place.
Merry Christmas!! 🎄The newsletter will be back on 1st January.
A massa:
Feliz Natal! 🎄A newsletter volta no 1 de janeiro.
